Moon Phases and Rituals — How to Work With the Lunar Cycle

April 2025 · 5 min read · Mara Blackwood

The lunar cycle runs approximately 29.5 days and divides into eight distinct phases. Each phase carries different energy — suited to different kinds of work, intention-setting and release. Working with the moon is not superstition. It's timing your energy with natural cycles.

🌑 New Moon — Plant Seeds

The sky is dark. This is the time for new beginnings, setting intentions and starting things. Write your intentions clearly. Light a candle. State what you're calling in. The new moon is the most powerful time for manifestation work.

🌒 Waxing Crescent — Take First Steps

Energy is building. Take the first concrete action toward your intention. Don't wait for perfect conditions — the waxing phase rewards momentum.

🌓 First Quarter — Push Through

Challenges emerge. This is a decision point — do you continue or adjust? The first quarter demands commitment. Work through obstacles rather than abandoning the intention.

🌔 Waxing Gibbous — Refine

You're close. Refine, adjust, persist. What needs tweaking? The goal is nearly in reach but may need fine-tuning before the full moon.

🌕 Full Moon — Celebrate and Release

Peak energy. Intentions set at the new moon may manifest now. Also powerful for releasing what no longer serves. Full moon rituals: salt baths, fire releasing, gratitude practice, charging crystals under moonlight.

🌖 Waning Gibbous — Gratitude

Give thanks for what was received. Share knowledge or abundance. Teach what you've learned. The waning phase begins the release cycle.

🌗 Last Quarter — Release

Let go of what isn't working. Forgive. Clear clutter — physical, emotional, energetic. Make space by removing, not adding.

🌘 Waning Crescent — Rest

The cycle closes. Rest, reflect, surrender. Don't force new beginnings yet. Recuperate before the next new moon restarts the cycle.
